The month marks a time to celebrate and commemorate the importance and significance of homeownership across our nation. Homeownership still constitutes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepingcurrentmatters.com\/2024\/01\/15\/homeownership-is-still-at-the-heart-of-the-american-dream\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart of the American Dream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and remains the number one way for most people to build personal and generational wealth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may prove too easy for many of us to take homeownership for granted, the truth is that homeownership has been historically \u2014 and presently \u2014 out of reach for many of our neighbors across America and the state of Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/decennial\/tables\/time-series\/coh-owner\/owner-tab.txt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1900<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the rate of homeownership across the entire nation was 46.5%. By 2000, the number had increased by a full twenty points to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">66.2%<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eyeonhousing.org\/2023\/10\/homeownership-rate-stays-at-66\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the rate continues to hover around 66%. National Homeownership Month offers us a time to reflect on those gains and to express our gratitude for the historic increases in access to homeownership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At New Era Homes, we are proud to offer Oregonians the opportunity to reach their dreams with homeownership and would call us all to reflection and action during the month of June. To mark National Homeownership Month, we encourage all Oregonians to reflect on the privilege of homeownership and to consider benefiting organizations that serve people for whom the dream of homeownership has not yet been achieved.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"ho\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>History of National Homeownership Month<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-pronged call for National Homeownership Month to be one of both celebration for gains in homeownership and consideration for those who are not yet within reach of homeownership aligns with the historic roots of the commemoration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Bill Clinton first declared June 2, 1995, National Homeownership Day. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/STATUTE-109\/pdf\/STATUTE-109-Pg1798.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his proclamation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he noted our nation\u2019s progress in making housing more affordable and accessible for all, citing policies like the National Housing Act of 1934 and the Housing Act of 1949.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/CFR-1999-title3-vol1\/pdf\/CFR-1999-title3-vol1-proc7104.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1998<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, President Clinton extended National Homeownership Day to National Homeownership Week, the first being observed June 7\u201313, 1998.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2002, George W. Bush extended the week to a month, declaring National Homeownership Month for the entirety of June. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov\/news\/releases\/2002\/06\/20020604-23.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his proclamation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, President Bush cited the federal government\u2019s commitment to \u201chelping any more Americans achieve\u201d the dream of homeownership. He also stated the nation\u2019s commitment to providing \u201call families with the tools and information they need to accumulate wealth and overcome barriers to homeownership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Presidents Clinton and Bush included civic pleas in their proclamations. Clinton enjoins Americans to \u201cobserve [National Homeownership Day] with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that celebrate the great American Dream. Bush\u2019s declaration includes a call for \u201cthe people of the United States to join [him] in recognizing the importance of providing all our citizens a chance to achieve the American Dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2023\/05\/31\/a-proclamation-on-national-homeownership-month-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a declaration for 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, President Biden issued the following plea: \u201cI call upon the people of this Nation to safeguard the American Dream by ensuring that everyone has access to an affordable home in a community of their choice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"ht\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How to Commemorate National Homeownership Month in Oregon<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the history and intent of National Homeownership Month, it is right, then, and in keeping with the proclamations of presidents across both parties, that we encourage Oregonians to remember and advocate for those for whom homeownership has remained out of reach. We can celebrate individual and national gains in homeownership while also remembering those who struggle with barriers to homeownership and affordable housing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Barriers to Housing in Oregon<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oregon Office of Economic Analysis finds that \u201chundreds of thousands of Oregon households . . . <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oregoneconomicanalysis.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/01\/orhhstruggle2021.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggle with high housing costs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relative to their incomes.\u201d According to the data, a full 54% of renters in Oregon do not have enough money to pay for other basic necessities after paying for rent; 20% of homeowners are in the same situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2240\" height=\"1511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021.png 2240w, https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021-1024x691.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021-768x518.png 768w, https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021-1536x1036.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.newerahomes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/orhhstruggle2021-2048x1381.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2240px) 100vw, 2240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huduser.gov\/portal\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/2023-AHAR-Part-1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development shows that Oregon has the second-highest rate of unsheltered homelessness in the country. Oregon also saw the second-highest percent increase in individuals experiencing homelessness during the coronavirus pandemic between 2020\u20132022. Compared to the rest of the nation, Oregon has the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2023\/10\/09\/oregon-homelessness-history-background-housing-solutions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth-largest prevalence of homelessness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per capita, after D.C., California, and Vermont.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Opportunities to Give Back<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such dire rates of homelessness across Oregon, National Homeownership Month presents us with an opportunity to serve those for whom homeownership has not yet been attainable. To that end, we\u2019ve compiled a list of organizations where you might consider donating your money, time, or other resources to commemorate National Homeownership Month in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Habitat for Humanity<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat for Humanity builds and improves places people can call home. They work with families to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitat.org\/about\/faq#how\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build their own homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alongside volunteers and pay for the home with an affordable mortgage. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/habitatoregon.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat for Humanity in Oregon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has various chapters with a multitude of volunteer opportunities, including working in the ReStore, constructing homes, performing outreach, and more.
